Tutorial: Cozy Cottage Illustration in Affinity Designer
This tutorial was done by the same author who did the last lighthouse tutorial. Once again it is nice to do a tutorial based on the actual software I was using, but the author tended to move at a very rapid pace ( a common problem in YouTube based tutorials. Using a lot of rewinding a pause I ended up with a rather nice looking image (I especially liked the shading and textures effects added to the image).
Tutorial: Design a Gritty Vintage Airshow Poster/ – Design Cuts
This image shows off the power of a vector (Illustrator) / bit map (Photoshop) software tag team in the creation of an image. The actual images (the map, the aircraft shape and text were all created in Illustrator and the weathering of the images was done in Photoshop.
Tutorial: Vintage Baseball Card in Photoshop – WebpageFX
This image had a lot of cool things: colourize the image of Joe DiMaggio, use of layer styles and blending modes to make the image of Joe and Yankee Stadium seem more like an illustration, use of layer styles to “age” the final card design.
The coolest part was the colourization of the image of Joe DiMaggio. It was a bit of a surprise to me when I realized that I had rarely done a colourization of black and white images. I had done lots of changing the colour of an item in a colour photo.
Tutorial: Image Inside Text with a Twist from How to Create BADA$$ Effects in Photoshop
I guess after three sports related images a well deserved drink is in order. Ok maybe not well deserved, but semi-deserved.
The cool thing about this image is it’s great use of splatter images (for lack of a word) as masks, backgrounds and textures. The other cool thing is that the impact of final image is definitely greater than the individual images that make up the image.
I have not posted anything in a while, so I figured it was time to get something done. A poster was a natural fit (I have already done a baker’s dozen posters on this website). I saw a tutorial on the Blue LightingTV YouTube channel, well it made my desire to get something done even greater. You can see the result.
Tutorial: Photoshop Down and Dirty Tricks for Designers Volume II
I saw this lesson on creating a similar image, but with a Jack Daniels logo. I decided that I had to create a version using the Hudson Bay logo for a number of reasons: 1) it is Canadian, 2) They did brand boxes with the logo, 3) I see a Hudson Bay shop selling their old style branded products almost every day and this is the type of stuff they would have in their store.
Once again, I have chosen an image that was created in Adobe Illustrator, even though my natural instinct would be to create the outline in Illustrator and do the texture in Photoshop. One of the most interesting parts of the image is the texture is masked to the bird shape. Masking in Photoshop is second nature to me, but until this tutorial I had never done it in Illustrator. In fact, although I knew it was possible to do masking in Illustrator, I was not 100% sure how to do it. I guess that is there important part of a tutorial, learning new techniques.

Yet another Photoshop/Illustrator image. The two things that drew me to this image was the modified text to fit a shape and the textures done on the Buffalo. Not that these two things are unusual, but that they both were done in Illustrator and not Photoshop (where I would most likely do these effects).
Side note: My great-grandmother, who was a very good piano teacher, tried to teach me this song on piano. I did not learn it, but this was not due to her failure as a teacher, but my failure as a student. In the end, all I think she really wanted to do was make my brother and I appericate music. To this end she was very successful.

Creating an image on a chalkboard is now very trendy. At first resturants put out a listing of their daily specials on an A-frame chalkboard. Somewhere along the line it was no loner enough to just list them with your normal hand writing. Now a chalkboard’s message had to include embellishments, fonts, text on a path and banners. Now a whole industry seems to have grown around having the best looking chalkboard outside your store.

This final image shows how the power of both Photoshop and Illustrator can be used together to create a better image. Illustrator is used to create the Roman style helmet design (see the below image). Photoshop is used to add textures to the helmet design to give it a more gritty texture.
