Ring Planet

Ring Planet

Software: Photoshop CC

Tutorial: How to Create an Alien Planet with Rings – Blue Lighting

Once again we have gone to where many Photoshop tutorials have gone before (to pretty awesome results)… space.

There is one thing I like about most of the Blue Lighting tutorials (and in most space tutorials from other websites) is that they start with a blank canvas. There is no looking on the web for a picture of space images, everything you see in the image was created in Photoshop. In this tutorial there was five distinct steps: 1) create stars, 2) create a nebula, 3) create a planet, 4) create rings, 5) put all the elements together and make sure it doesn’t look like a dogs breakfast.  In this case it was pretty easy and it look great.

Ice Cream – Flat Art Style

Software: Illustrator CC

Tutorial:  Graphic Tweakz

This image uses the simplicity of the flat image style. The interesting fact is flat art style became popular due to the rise (and limitations) of mobile technology (for example the Zune and the iPod and iPhone). The use of limited graphic elements and colours were perfect for the small screens of mobile technology. It allowed for bright easily designed and used interfaces.

In this image uses the basic flat style elements to suggest melting chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. I can see this image as the bases for an icon for an app for an ice cream store, or as the background to ice cream packaging.

Text Art – Drop off

Drop Off

Software: Illustrator CC

Tutorial:  Satori Graphics

Like the last image (Deconstruct text), this is a text based image and like the last image the image and the text help reinforce rather other to make a stronger image. Despite the effectiveness the graphic to support the text there are some limitations to this effect (I think it would not work on a serif or a script font and it would not work very well with an the following letters: Q W E U S D J L Z V M and a few others might not work well in some cases).

Bauhaus Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CC

Tutorial: Blue LightingTV YouTube Channel

I have not posted anything in a while, so I figured it was time to get something done. A poster was a natural fit (I have already done a baker’s dozen posters on this website). I saw a tutorial on the Blue LightingTV YouTube channel, well it made my desire to get something done even greater. You can see the result.

Burnt logo

Woodgrain texture for retro-revival and maybe for wild-west

Logo “burnt” into wood

Software: Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1

Tutorial: Photoshop Down and Dirty Tricks for Designers Volume II

I saw this lesson on creating a similar image, but with a Jack Daniels logo. I decided that I had to create a version using the Hudson Bay logo for a number of reasons: 1) it is Canadian, 2) They did brand boxes with the logo, 3) I see a Hudson Bay shop selling their old style branded products almost every day and this is the type of stuff they would have in their store.

As seen on some of my other postings, I love doing space based images. So when Blue Lighting posted a tutorial on creating an eclipse image, I guess I could not say no.

Tattoo stye bird

tatoo-bird

Software: Adobe Illustrator CC

Tutorial: Spoon Graphics Blog

Once again, I have chosen an image that was created in Adobe Illustrator, even though my natural instinct would be to create the outline in Illustrator and do the texture in Photoshop. One of the most interesting parts of the image is the texture is masked to the bird shape. Masking in Photoshop is second nature to me, but until this tutorial I had never done it in Illustrator. In fact, although I knew it was possible to do masking in Illustrator, I was not 100% sure how to do it. I guess that is there important part of a tutorial, learning new techniques.
