Old Air Show Poster

Ring Planet

Software: Illustrator CC, Photoshop CC

Tutorial: Design a Gritty Vintage Airshow Poster/ – Design Cuts

This image shows off the power of a vector (Illustrator) / bit map (Photoshop) software tag team in the creation of an image. The actual images (the map, the aircraft shape and text were all created in Illustrator and the weathering of the images was done in Photoshop.

Blended Images - Dual Threat

Software: Photoshop CC

Tutorial:  Image Inside Text with a Twist from How to Create BADA$$ Effects in Photoshop

I guess after three sports related images a well deserved drink is in order. Ok maybe not well deserved, but semi-deserved.

The cool thing about this image is it’s great use of splatter images (for lack of a word) as masks, backgrounds and textures. The other cool thing is that the impact of final image is definitely greater than the individual images that make up the image.

Elvis Letterpress poster

Elvis Letterpress Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CC

Tutorial: Blue LightingTV YouTube Channel –

My first posting of 2017 (mind you I did the artwork in late 2016… sigh).

Speaking of the past, letterpress printing is a style of printing that was popular before the more flexable offset printing took over (which has been replaced by digital printing). Letterpress can trace it’s roots back to Gutenburg in the 1400’s. One of the features of letterpress is it’s texture, colour overlays and sublity of colour variations.

One company who took advantage (and is still taking advantage) of the letterpress printing is the Hatch Show Print company (Nashville)  who in the 1920’s to the 1960’s created lots of posters for the various vaudville and country music acts. The Hatch Show Print Company made posters for Hank Snow, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Elvis and more. This poster is an attempt to create some of the style of a Johnny Cash poster that the Hatch company created in the 1960’s.

I find it amusing that we use extreamly accuriate digital tools to recreate a style of printing that was popular before computers were invented.

Bauhaus Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CC

Tutorial: Blue LightingTV YouTube Channel

I have not posted anything in a while, so I figured it was time to get something done. A poster was a natural fit (I have already done a baker’s dozen posters on this website). I saw a tutorial on the Blue LightingTV YouTube channel, well it made my desire to get something done even greater. You can see the result.

1930’s – 1940’s style posters

Software: Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1

Tutorial: Blue LightingTV YouTube Channel

This set of images was based on the image above. This is a tutorial image is based on the WPA posters of the 1930’s. The posters had a strong Art Deco feel to them and tended to use very stylized symbols on the posters.

Earth Day Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1

Tutorial: BakaArts YouTube Channel & Iceflow Studios YouTube Channel

If you have seen my “Earth from Space” posting –  then you you should be able to see where I got the directions for creating the space part of this image. The other part of this image was influenced by BakaArts tutorial to create a tree in half a glass sphere. I decided that I wanted a whole sphere, but with major cracks in it.Slowly the image became an “Earth Day” poster.

I also designed the “Earth Day 2014” logo to finish the image. The website is a real site with tons of interesting information about the environment. It is most definitely worth a visit.

Agent Ops Movie Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1

Tutorial: Photoshop Down and Dirty Tricks for Designers

This image is supposed to be a spy movie poster and I think it rather good. Notice I did not say great, to be great it would have to Bond movie. James Bond made it respectable for spies to dress in a tuxedo. Can you imagine James Bond in scruffy plaid shirt and baggy track pants and cheap running shoes…. Nope and neither can you.

Now the big question: which was the best James Bond actor? Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan or Craig… Let the bickering begin!
