Elvis Letterpress poster

Elvis Letterpress Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CC

Tutorial: Blue LightingTV YouTube Channel –

My first posting of 2017 (mind you I did the artwork in late 2016… sigh).

Speaking of the past, letterpress printing is a style of printing that was popular before the more flexable offset printing took over (which has been replaced by digital printing). Letterpress can trace it’s roots back to Gutenburg in the 1400’s. One of the features of letterpress is it’s texture, colour overlays and sublity of colour variations.

One company who took advantage (and is still taking advantage) of the letterpress printing is the Hatch Show Print company (Nashville)  who in the 1920’s to the 1960’s created lots of posters for the various vaudville and country music acts. The Hatch Show Print Company made posters for Hank Snow, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Elvis and more. This poster is an attempt to create some of the style of a Johnny Cash poster that the Hatch company created in the 1960’s.

I find it amusing that we use extreamly accuriate digital tools to recreate a style of printing that was popular before computers were invented.

Water Phone

Software: Photoshop CC

Tutorial:  NoelnehArt YouTube Channel –

Every now and then I want to do an image that is just fun to do and maybe a bit quirky. This water drop phone image fit the bill. It was fun to do, but even more enjoyable was that I did not follow the instructions 100% – I wanted to make small changes which gave me a bit of a mental workout.

I am semi-sure that this phone is an apple iPhone, if is was a Samsung phone I guess flames should be coming out of the phone.

Heads up display eye effect

Software: Adobe Illustrator CC and Photoshop CC

Tutorial:  PHLearn Photoshop Channel –

The advantage of this graphic effect is two fold. Thanks to the Iron Man / Avengers movies the effect the seems futuristic, secondly the effect is easy (and quick) to do. I originally wanted to use a photo of Robert Downey Jr. / Tony Stark, but I realized that people would feel I had just grabbed an image off the Marvel website. So instead I used an image from the battlefield game.

Bauhaus Poster

Software: Adobe Photoshop CC

Tutorial: Blue LightingTV YouTube Channel

I have not posted anything in a while, so I figured it was time to get something done. A poster was a natural fit (I have already done a baker’s dozen posters on this website). I saw a tutorial on the Blue LightingTV YouTube channel, well it made my desire to get something done even greater. You can see the result.

Burnt logo

Woodgrain texture for retro-revival and maybe for wild-west

Logo “burnt” into wood

Software: Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1

Tutorial: Photoshop Down and Dirty Tricks for Designers Volume II

I saw this lesson on creating a similar image, but with a Jack Daniels logo. I decided that I had to create a version using the Hudson Bay logo for a number of reasons: 1) it is Canadian, 2) They did brand boxes with the logo, 3) I see a Hudson Bay shop selling their old style branded products almost every day and this is the type of stuff they would have in their store.

Compass Rose

Software: Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC

Tutorial: Spoon Graphics Blog

Most of my images I create for this blog are Photoshop images. There are two reasons for this:

1) I have done more work in Photoshop, therefore I am more comfortable in Photoshop (not that I am uncomfortable in Illustrator) so I tend to look upon experimantial Photoshop images with greater confidence.

2) There are more Photoshop tutorials on the internet and in books.

Therefore, I decided to do this image in Adobe Illustrator, if for nothing else, get out of the normal. It also helps that I have a thing for maps.
