Ice Cream – Flat Art Style

Software: Illustrator CC

Tutorial:  Graphic Tweakz

This image uses the simplicity of the flat image style. The interesting fact is flat art style became popular due to the rise (and limitations) of mobile technology (for example the Zune and the iPod and iPhone). The use of limited graphic elements and colours were perfect for the small screens of mobile technology. It allowed for bright easily designed and used interfaces.

In this image uses the basic flat style elements to suggest melting chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. I can see this image as the bases for an icon for an app for an ice cream store, or as the background to ice cream packaging.

Text Art – Drop off

Drop Off

Software: Illustrator CC

Tutorial:  Satori Graphics

Like the last image (Deconstruct text), this is a text based image and like the last image the image and the text help reinforce rather other to make a stronger image. Despite the effectiveness the graphic to support the text there are some limitations to this effect (I think it would not work on a serif or a script font and it would not work very well with an the following letters: Q W E U S D J L Z V M and a few others might not work well in some cases).

Fake 3D background image

background 01

Software: Illustrator CC

Tutorial:  Tutvid

Background images are sort of boring. In many cases that are boring on purpose, after all you want to the background not to take over the foreground image. But that doesn’t mean that they have to be boring. This image is on the cool side (I somehow think M. C. Escher would have approved of this image).

Another sort of cool thing is that the image was created in Adobe Illustrator, therefore a vector image. So this image could be made in any size. This makes the background very flexible. Another thing about of the image, it was not created with 3D software – this is a 2D image. So for a “boring” background image it is rather remarkable.

80s Style

Phone World

Software: Photoshop CC

Tutorial:  Spoon Graphics

Everything old is new again… not an original thought, but it seems to be a true one. Just look at the title graphics in the upcoming Thor Ragnarok movie. The thing I find interesting is that a lot of the 80’s graphic style came from the development of computers in the graphics field. 80’s computers were limited in the number of colour they could produce (early paint programs were limited to 256 colours, 64 colours, 16 colours or even 32 shades of grey!). 80’s computers were also limited by their speed (or more accurate their lack of speed). They could only manipulate only a few graphic items before the computer slowed down (or crashed). This lack colours and design elements lead to graphics that were bold and bright and lacked subtle shades.

I find this semi-funny. We now have very powerful computers, by we seem to be creating graphics that pay homage to less powerful computers. I guess nostalga is more powerful than even the most powerful computer, or that the we just want to celebrate the fact despite the lack of power of 80’s computers the 80’s graphic style was pretty awesome!

Tutorial:  Image Inside Text with a Twist from How to Create BADA$$ Effects in Photoshop

This image shows how a reasonable, but not great image can be turned into something rather effective. In this case the final image could be easily a basis for a motocross event poster. Using layer styles, brushes and layer masks the blue splatter behind the main image is quickly created.

Tutorial:  3D Mobile Effect – Tutorials Junction

When I saw this tutorial the first thing that popped in my mind is “Alice in Wonderland” meets the mobile digital world. I liked how I was able to merge the images together despite a major differences in tone of the images.

Transparent Shirt effect

Torn Paper Portrait

Software: Photoshop CC

Tutorial:  See Through Clothes Effect – Tutorials Junction

This image is a bit misleading – to get this image done the main transparent cloth effect is rather easy to do, but the little touches that makes it really works took about half of the production time. As it can be guessed making and blending modes does most of the heavy lifting. It is colour curves and displacement layers that make the final image work.
